About who needs care: Mom is a healthy and mobile, English fluent , first generation Cantonese immigrant with moderate Alzheimer's who needs constant supervision. Dad needs a weekly break from the supervision for a few hours to reconnect socially and pursue his interests. During his break, mom needs to go for a walk, engaged in conversation, and be taken to weekly hair appointments. Once a weekly pattern is established and trust is built, we hope to increase the frequency of visits so dad can develop more social support and pursue his own interests. About the care needs: Companion should have a safe driving record, engage conversationally with dementia patients (know how to redirect and distract rather than correct and remind). It would be helpful if the companion has an interest in flower arrangements, knows how to safely use gym equipment (getting on/off machines, setting seat heights, etc), and can walk for at least 20 min (moderate speed). Curious extrovert to ask questions about personal history and experiences and talk shop about social work & mental health topics would be a bonus. Services needed include: transportation, and companionship.
