About who needs care: 78-year-old man has cancer that has spread to many areas. He has a lot of pain, but it is being managed and controlled well with medication. I am helping his wife, who is my sister, find good home care. His wife (my sister) is a nurse and is very capable. We need someone to sit with him, bring him food, bed bath, help him go to the bathroom, etc. Right now he sleeps late and is up in the afternoons and evenings. He spends almost all of his waking time laying on the couch - mostly wathcing TV, phoning friends, and on his phone. He can't walk around much. With a caregiver, my sister could run to the store, do errands and some yard work, etc. They live in a big, lovely house on an acreage, in a gated community called Hidden Valley, which is a 15 minute drive from Hollister. There is a a hospice nurse visiting 2-3 times a week to monitor him and provide medication advice. So, he is well taken care of, but we need some help. The schedule for the care giver is flexible, it could be several times a week, we could work out timing that suits everyone. The main thing is to get a kind, responsible, capable person to help out. About the care needs: Calm, caring and experienced with very sick people. Be able to help him walk to the bathroom. He is not a large man, about 5' 8" and he has lost a lot of weight (and he wasn't overweight before) and is weak. He is frustrated with his situation. Services needed include: companionship, feeding, and bathing / dressing.
