About who needs care: My father has had Parkinson's for many years. He lives independently in a spiritual community where he is responsible for much of the grounds work. At this point he largely coordinates volunteers and others to do the actual work although he rakes and weeds and completes simple tasks. My father needs assistance with medical appointments and shopping as well as occasional assistance with projects at his home. My father's movement is highly limited by Parkinson's but he compensates well with his golf cart and a life full of regular responsibilities that keeps him active. He uses a cane and walker. His balance and vision have gotten worse in recent months. He is no longer driving and needs another person around when doing tasks outside his community or tasks within the community that require more walking. His typical day - goes in golf cart to open the temple, simple grounds work, meal, writes emails, rests, continues with basic household tasks. Attends spiritual services 3-4 days per week at the temple. His life focus is spiritual with alternative health perspectives. He used to work for the library and loves art, music, and nature. About the care needs: Someone who can be present to support, but allow my father to do the full range of what he is capable of is best. A softer personality is easier for him. He is clear about what he needs and will provide very detailed instructions about what he wants. Someone who is a mellow driver, can move at a slower speed, and keep things light and relaxed. My father does not always talk a lot and sometimes gets very anxious, so someone who can be comfortable with quiet, and stay calm and grounded would be a good fit for him. The person will need to be comfortable with alternative religious and world perspectives as my father lives on an ashram. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, and light housekeeping.
