My mother has middle-stage dementia / Alzheimers. he can walk with the assistance of a rollator, but she cannot drive. She is otherwise in OK physical shape as far as I know. She loves her two dogs and three cats and is restless by nature -- she needs to get out of the house regularly and go to the store, the park, etc. Mostly she craves companionship and conversation. She lives right now with her husband, my stepfather, but they have a lot of conflict, and he badly needs help dealing with her. (He is 91 years old, but in good physical and mental health for his age.) About the care needs: The ideal caregiver for my mom would be friendly, warm, kind, open-minded and very patient. A great deal of patience is a must -- she can be quite emotional and angry sometimes. She also needs someone who can say "no" when necessary. Liking animals would be very helpful. It would be best if the person is not too hung up on appearances and manners -- my mom has always dressed down, and that's OK, just as long as she's not being unhygienic. We need someone primarily to keep my mom company, drive her around, and make sure she is taking her meds and keeping up personal hygiene. Secondarily, I'm hoping the caregiver can help with some housekeeping and cook a meal 1-2 times a week.
