About who needs care: My mother has mobility issues, diabetes and heart failure. She is partially incontinent, but is able to see to her needs at home. Recently she has started to struggle with some confusion, memory loss and significant anxiety. She can feed herself but her appetite is low. She is very slow, methodical and speaks so slowly that sometimes she forgets the question. She responds well to patience and a hands-off approach. She likes to talk and loved bingo in rehab. She loves car rides and getting her nails painted. She has a big sweet tooth. Ice cream and chocolate are big favorites. Her ideal day would involve waking up late (after 10) and then eating whatever sounds good. A short car ride in the early afternoon that leads to getting her nails painted. Then home where she can curl up in her lift chair and talk. About the care needs: The ideal caregiver would be very patient and flexible in their approach. When my mother is allowed to do things her way (within the limits of safety) and at her own pace (which is very slow) then she can be very cooperative and things will go well. Just slow. Also, she doesn't like to be touched. She has recently become very anxious and needs to know that someone is always there with her. She needs a caregiver that is familiar with dementia. She told me that she feels safe when she can see me, I tuck her in and call her honey. She responds best to someone that is engaging but soft and non-confrontational. We have a dog named Bailey. He's a rescue so he can be scared of new people. His bark sounds awful, but he's not a biter. A caregiver needs to be OK with him and understand that once he meets you he will be fine. Services needed include: companionship, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
