About who needs care: Hi - my mother has Lewy body dementia, the progressive brain disorder, which exhibits both physical Parkinson's like symptoms as well as the worsening dementia. She was diagnosed about 3 years ago. Her illness has progressed, but she's still at a state where she can handle most basic tasks on her own -- eating, dressing herself, bathing -- and she can mostly walk around on her own. Cognitively, she's definitely shown some decline -- forgetting things, sometimes more difficult to have a conversation with her -- but she is still fairly aware and present, we're able to have normal conversations with her, and she's been very open and proactive to doing things to help slow the progression of the illness. She has generally had a positive attitude, though of course she is distressed when the physical symptoms of her illness flare up. Typically she and my dad will have a low key day; besides meals, reading, watching TV, walks in the neighborhood, and she has been trying to incorporate physical activity (speciality exercise classes and she recently started physical therapy). She can get tired easily if she's over-stimulated, but is fine taking short car trips, and doing things like going to the store, or going out for a meal, etc. About the care needs: Someone who is positive and warm/comforting, someone that would help put her at easy. Ideally someone who has experience with memory care and/or patients who have had related interests. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, and light housekeeping.
