About the job

About who needs care: This care will include two people, husband and wife of 75 years. The male is 101 and the female is 96. The male is a retired newspaper/magazine executive. He is very intelligent and his cognition is excellent. He is hard of hearing (but has hearing aids), blind, a little stooped, and walks slowly with a cane. It is important to know that the male is demanding and strong willed. He will need an aid who is strong, intelligent, and patient - someone who will not shy away or get angry if/when he yells for help and/or because he is frustrated. He has a temper, but he does not get physical in any way. The female is the sweetest, smartest, most patient woman who LOVES her family. She is EXHAUSTED because she continues to be the primary caregiver of the male, as well as managing the house, meals, laundry, etc.. She has a wound on one of her ankles, one that she broke years ago. The wound is not healing well and the doctors are tending to her twice a week with treatments, wraps, and skin graphs. It is important to know that the female is the one who will set the tasks and the only way that she will REST & RECOVER is if the aid does things the way the female wants them - including how she manages/cares for the male, folds the clothes, how things are organized in the fridge, etc. etc. etc. While most of the senior care will be focused on the male, the female is really the one who is being served (by receiving time off!!). Until the female's ankle is fully healed, the couple will need the aid to drive them to appointments, etc. The aid will use the couple's vehicle. The aid will have their own private space in the basement (which is a walkout - with a lovely view of the lake). The typical hours of work will be daily as follows: +/- 9:30 to make breakfast/coffee, etc. +/- 10:45 to help the male by laying out clothes, etc. +/- noon to sit and chat with the male and/or assist with household chores +/- 2:00 make/serve/eat lunch together +/- same as noon ** note that during the day, the aid will have time to go down to their private space and relax, read, etc. They will have a video monitor so that they can see and hear if they are needed. +/- 6:00 make/serve cocktails +/- 7:00 make/serve dinner (the female loves to cook and may want to lead this effort - the aid will need to follow their direction) ** note that the couple doesn't need assistance going to bed, however, any tasks that the aid can do that the female typically does will help her Generally, we think the "work hours" will be 9:30-9:30 with a lot of downtime. They will get in a groove - the key is that the aid is intelligent and patient, and will follow the flow and direction as prescribed by the female. The chemistry between aid and the couple is key. About the care needs: Not at this time. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, and companionship.
