About who needs care: My mother-in-law sits in a chair and watches TV in her room all day. We are often in the home, but we still like to have someone keep an eye on her so that she doesn't fall. She needs monitoring when she uses a walker to get to the toilet, and she needs someone to bring her water and juice and remind her to drink. Ideally, a caregiver for her would be a student who doesn't mind the sound of a TV while studying or a person who is happy to sit and read, sew or watch television with her. The job requires very little personal care and no heavy lifting. We might choose one caregiver for regular days and another who is more experienced for shower days; we can be flexible with different caregivers strengths. The caregiver might bring a tray of food in to her, put in a load of her laundry, pick up and disinfect her room and bathroom or help us with the dishwasher, but most of the day (or a shift) would be sitting with her as she watches TV, reads or works crossword puzzles. About the care needs: The ideal caregiver would not mind sitting quietly and doing their own thing for most of the shift. My mother-in-law will smile in friendliness and make a very small amount of small-talk, but she really doesn't want to go shopping, take a walk or play games. She is most content to just sit - and to be allowed to do so. Services needed include: meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, and bathing / dressing.
