About who needs care: Philip is 93. He's got arthritis and is hunched over. He's very independent. His short and long term memory are becoming more and more compromised as he ages. We have yet to understand why. He forgets appointments, conversations, important information. He's stubborn and doesn't concede to interference, but this has as much to do with his personality as with his age. He says he bathes, but hardly does, he's not adapt at self care or housecleaning. He's contrary and difficult. He was almost evicted last year because he couldn't keep his apartment clean, but also refused help. He's been diagnosed with melanoma and is recovering from surgery. It's possible that his decline is going to accelerate soon. About the care needs: First of all, Philip is a nice person. He loves chess, puzzles, and socializing. But he's very contrary and a caregiver needs to be both sensitive and respectful, but also be able to reroute him and call him on his BS. He doesn't have a good sense of himself, or his limitations, and will go through a lot of effort to perpetuate his beliefs about himself. Services needed include: meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, and bathing / dressing.
