About the job

About who needs care: My aunt has to be in wheelchair and must wear a complex brace because of a problem with hip dislocations. She Is presently doctoring for that and it may improve s bit with treatment, but she will always need help with personal care, feeding, dressing, etc. because she has become physically more fragile since this condition began. She has broken both wrists in the past, which have healed, but she does not have much feeling in her 3 middle fingers on each hand. She can however still feed herself and hold a cup or glass with both hands to drink. At 95, Intellectually she has some short-term memory loss but still functions quite well in conversation and enjoys talking to people and attending family dinners and gatherings when held. She has local family who love her and visit quite often. Access to family is not a problem. About the care needs: I am not my aunt's power-of attorney or decision-maker. My cousin is. I am a scout trying to find what is available and possible for her care. She was at a rehab center for a month or so, after which she had to be moved to a local senior center. That place is less friendly and welcoming than where she was, people keep to themselves and the care is average. She is on a floor for extra care patients, but it is minimal, I believe. She wants to go home and live there with help, which we, her family, believe is necessary for most of the time because she tends to forget that she cannot move around without her brace and walker, and now wheelchair. Family can take her to appointments or any kind of travel she needs and several of us live quite near to her. They have all been part of her life over the years and see each other quite often. We are all aging, as well, however, and it is no longer possible for us to be live there with her. She needs overnight care because she has already gotten up at night at rehab to go to the bathroom without help and re-injured herself. She needs help dressing and eating in the morning, taking her medications and getting lunch, and for dinner and bedtime. A live in companion or 2 (12 hrs day, 12 hours overnight) who is/are friendly and attentive who also can give my aunt her space when needed each day, who has some training or experience as a nurse's aid or such to kindly help my aunt follow doctor's orders, deal with her brace, is careful with medications, etc., would be great. Mostly my aunt watches television at home during the day and in the summer loves to sit out on her porch during the afternoon and early evenings when she can. Someone who can carry on an intelligent conversation with common sense, decency, and empathy could make a trustworthy companion. Services needed include: meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
