About who needs care: My father lives alone and is receiving chemo treatments for stage 4 colon cancer. He has a colostomy bag and a feeding tube. He cannot/will not empty his colostomy bag which needs to be drained 3 to 4 times in a 24 hr. period, and he cannot feed himself through his feeding tube. He has been hospitalized for dehydration due to not eating or drinking enough while on chemo So he needs to be monitored to make sure that he is getting enough nutrition and hydration. He typically likes to sleep until 8/8:30 AM, and have coffee and a light Breakfast. He spends most of his day watching television. He enjoys, watching news and sports. He typically goes to bed somewhere around 11 p.m. . He needs somebody to stay with him at night and check on his colostomy Until he was diagnosed with cancer, he was healthy and active, playing golf every week, traveling and socializing weekly with friends, so this has been a huge lifestyle change and very hard for him. He loves rock music, and was still going to several concerts a month. He also enjoys watching baseball, and football. He has been receiving home health nursing services to change the wafer on his colostomy bag. That will all be ending on October 25 so we are in the process of looking for a nurse as an aid who can take care of all his other needs. He will probably need someone to help him, wash his clothes and bedding as well. About the care needs: My father feels comfortable with caregivers who are competent at what they do. He also feels comfortable with people who are empathetic to his situation who have had family members who have had cancer or who have had cancer themselves. He needs a caregiver who is very familiar with and comfortable draining colostomy bags. He is very friendly and respectful, but he hates his colostomy bag and has had so many mishaps with it, so he gets very frustrated with someone who is not well-versed in colostomy bag care. Sometimes he needs somebody to listen to him complain about his situation. When somebody understands what people are going through during chemo, he really appreciates it. When he is watching sports, he mostly likes to be left alone and does not like to talk. He just wants to enjoy the games.
