About who needs care: My father is 78 years old and in good physical shape but with advanced dementia. He can still bathe, clothe, change, use the bathroom and feed himself. However, his cognitive abilities are pretty bad to the extent that he can't carry out or follow a normal conversation. He gets confused easily and obsesses about certain tasks. He is still very social, loves to take long walks, have meals with other people, and care for his small dog. We are looking for someone who could do some basic cooking and cleaning but also take him out for walks and engage him in small projects like gardening. He is generally of a pleasant demeanor but can also get paranoid and a bit manic at times so it would be important for the person to know how to handle that. About the care needs: Ideally this person would have a warm and engaging demeanor (my father is Latino and responds well to people who are gregarious). Although his native language is Spanish, he speaks and understands English so being Spanish-speaking would be a plus but is not strictly necessary. Two important skills would be to be able to take long walks in nearby state parks (my father loves the wilderness) and to have some experience with dealing with people with dementia. Knowing how to engage him in simple house projects would be ideal. Services needed include: meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, and companionship.
