About who needs care: My mom has a neurological condition that affects her movement and short-term memory. She was still independent with minor limitations but then had a stroke. While we expect her to have further improvement, she is currently incontinent and requires a wheelchair. She requires extensive assistance to transfer from wheelchair to bed, etc. She has almost no use of her legs and moderate use of her arms and sometimes needs a little assistance eating. The goal is for her to return home (currently in a rehab facility) with my dad, who can handle the majority of her daily needs but 1. He needs to go out for shopping, etc and can't leave her alone and 2. He needs a physical rest from continuous caregiving through the day. Cognitively she is sometimes confused and has short-term memory issues but is capable of regular conversation and expressing her needs. A regular day would be providing her with assistance getting dressed and bathed in the morning (shower can happen anytime really, every other day), eating meals and snacks through the day, helping her use her phone to communicate with friends and family as needed (she can do most phone use alone), helping her move around the house to watch TV, read, do a puzzle, etc, and going outside for a stroll in the wheelchair for fresh air. Also she has irregular and sometimes frequent bowel and urinary movements so she needs depends changed and cleaned up often. At this point my mom requires a two -person assist for some transfers. We are assuming when she returns home she will have made gains that allow for a one -person assist. My dad prefers to handle all cleaning and meals himself. The house is kept extremely clean and tidy. About the care needs: My mom enjoys gardening and being outdoors, someone interested in birds and plants that would enjoy walks in the park would be great. My parents are progressive and care a great deal about climate change. They are fairly minimalist to reduce their consumption and would appreciate someone that respects, and to some extent shares, those views. My mom is fairly small- about 5'-5" and 125 lbs- but she will likely need a lot of physical assistance moving around. Services needed include: feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
