Hands-on Care Needed For My Loved One In Staten Island

About who needs care: I do want to say that the person in question is a friend of the family. Her family is in England and Ireland. I am in constant touch with her son who Is also looking into options. I told him I would research possible solutions. He will be coming to New York in a few weeks and will be giving her some options. If she insists on staying in her home, I believe she needs a care giver coming in for several hours, three or four days a week. I visit and bring her groceries and tidy up a bit, but, for various reasons, I am not able to provide the additional care that is needed. She broke her hip in December 2023. Up until then she was pretty much OK. She is a Type1 Diabetic and has always managed her diabetes very well. She has some dementia which has gotten worse in the last several months. She lives in a three-floor townhome. Her hygiene is not good. Her days are basically eating her meals and watching TV. She will take care service over to Stop & Shop every now and then. Prior to her breaking her hip, she enjoyed just going over to TJ Maxx and walking around the store for exercise. I have asked and she has no interest in going to a senior center. She is quite happy with enjoying watching her shows on TV and going out shopping every now and then. Prior to breaking her hip, she was driving. The car battery is dead and she says she wants to start driving again. This is an absolute NO in my opinion. It is a discussion her son will be having with her when he comes over. About the care needs: I think she can get along with almost anyone. She is a retired teacher. She does go to Catholic church and goes to mass on Saturdays at 5:00 on her own. She meets up with a neighbor and they walk home together after. Perhaps she would go more often if there was someone to take her. No specialized skill although I do think if they drive and have a car it would be a plus in order to go over to the supermarket or other stores every now and then. Services needed include: meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, and bathing / dressing.
