About who needs care: My 87-year-old mom is in poor health, with AFib, CHF, poor kidney function. Her last illness landed her in the hospital for 3 weeks. She can no longer sit up without assistance. She can no longer walk or get in and out of bed without assistance. She has incontinence issues and seems to be developing dementia. She is currently in a nursing home but is faring poorly there due to the lack of attention she needs. Her ideal day would be to have someone help her get out of bed in the morning, get her cleaned and dressed, fed and provide her company throughout the day, helping with bathroom breaks and eating lunch and dinner. She takes a lot of medications, and those would be given out on the schedule provided by her doctors. She was an avid gardener in her day and would love to get outside to see her gardens and get some sunlight on her face. She likes to read, to play cards, to watch TV. She'd need help getting ready for bed. In the last few weeks, she has been soiling herself at nighttime which gets her very distressed so she'd need help with that. About the care needs: The ideal caregiver would be kind and gentle but also resolute, and able to not take things personally when the dementia kicks in. An interest in flowers and plants would be great. My mom used to like to bake, she has a bit of a sweet tooth so someone who likes baking would be nice. We are getting my mom a hospital bed and a Hoyer sling, so knowing how to use them would be necessary. My mom would be very uncomfortable with a male caregiver Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
