About who needs care: She just had foot surgery and needs help around the house. She has a knee scooter but isn't great with it and can't prep food and get it to the table so I would need you to prepare simple foods at her house and bring it to her. Help her from bed to couch. Drive her to follow-up doctor appointments, which includes helping her get to car with the scooter. She is very chatty, loves to read and watch TV. She will talk your ear off. She has basic senior memory loss. Sometimes she remembers, sometimes she doesn't. She can be anxious at times. She is mostly self-sufficient - she still drives but with the foot surgery, she needs some help. About the care needs: You must be very patient. My mom talks a lot and doesn't answer "yes" or "no" questions. Any question posed to her results in a very long story and the question is rarely answered. She often tells you what she thinks you want to hear, rather than what she really wants - just to be polite. Mom is very pleasant but can be stubborn at times, at least with her daughter! But she is not mean. You should be outgoing and like to talk but don't mind being interrupted constantly. Everything should roll right off your back. She especially loves to talk about the old days so if you grew up in NY, that would be helpful. The only real specialized skill is not getting frustrated and helping her get from her house to your car on the knee scooter to go to the doctor (3 appts coming up). There is 1 step down from her front door that is tricky. She will need to be helped down the 1 step. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, and mobility assistance.
