About who needs care: I am a woman in my late 30s, who recently became disabled, and am looking for a personal care assistant to help me live my life. As a result of a spinal cord injury, I became quadriplegic, paralyzed from the shoulders down. This means that I need complete assistance with my personal care (bathing, dressing, eating, etc) and help with stretching and exercise. Additionally, I need someone who can support me while participating in activities I enjoy, such as cooking, exploring outdoors, visiting museums and exhibitions, going to shows, dinners with friends, and other things that make living in NYC great. Of course, there are also the at-home day-to-day tasks that we all need to manage. About the care needs: An ideal candidate will be strong, energetic (accessible subways are sometimes not the closest stop), able to take direction well, have good communication skills and attention to detail, and compassionate. If you like to do hair and makeup, that's a plus! Having experience with patients who have a spinal cord injury, and especially those who are quadriplegic, is not required, but would be extremely helpful. The position requires use of a Hoyer lift (I can train you if you're willing to learn!). Services needed include: meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
