About who needs care: My dad was always active and independent, but in the last 6-8 years, he has had brain surgery (shunt to drain fluid from his brain to his stomach) and heart surgery (triple bypass), and retired during Covid. As a result of his surgeries, he has become much more cautious about exerting himself, and since he hasn't been very mobile, he's been losing strength in his arms and legs, and any illness- even a cold- can keep him in bed for over a week. I also believe he has psoriatic arthritis. We have stairs in the house that he always managed on his own, but now he needs support. My mother has been his only help but she cannot lift him if he falls, and he's recently struggled with incontinence and thats been challenging for her to manage to as she is in her 70s herself. About the care needs: Someone very patient is ideal. He was always very independent and is still adjusting to people doing things for him. He still doesnt like when my mom or I try to help, he at least always wants to try himself first. He takes some time to adjust and get familiar with new people- thats always been a personality trait of his but I think he's become more rigid as he's aged. I would love if someone could practice physical therapy with him to build his leg strength back and improve his posture. He also loves watching sports and playing chess- but his eyesight is going as well, so the games move very slowly. Services needed include: meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
