About who needs care: Karen is my grandmother and 82 years old. She lives with my grandfather, Jerry, who is also 82. Jerry has been promoted to primary caretaker this year, although it has been very challenging. Karen had breast cancer 15+ years ago and it has returned, but in her spine. She experiences a lot of pain sometimes in her back and legs. She also has started to become more confused or disoriented, although has improved since coming off prescribed opioids. She is easily redirectable, but can get anxious and needs reassurance. She sometimes has a hard time trusting people and the priority first would her becoming comfortable with a new person in her home. She does not need specific nursing cares yet, mostly just supervision and socialization. We do not have a formal diagnosis of dementia for her, but there has been a decline in her memory and overall cognition. She has a lot of anxiety because of this and feels embarrassed about people thinking she is "crazy" (she certainly is not!). She is spunky and likes to joke around otherwise. Her husband, Jerry, is present in the home as well but has become the primary caretaker for Karen and most day to day things in their home (bills, lawn care, getting meds set up for Karen, coordinating appointments). Jerry also needs to establish rapport and trust with someone coming in to assist Karen. They are both pleasant folks for the most part, but it is helpful to note that much of the day is spent watching News. Karen would benefit from different entertainment, socialization, and a better routine. Jerry does not have experience taking care of someone before and also would benefit from a routine with Karen. They have a supportive family who all works full time so we are over there as much as possible. They have a person who has cleaned there house for many years and comes weekly. They have a beautiful home and would be able to private pay. About the care needs: The ideal caregiver for Karen would be someone who can approach her and Jerry with a humble attitude, listen to both of their needs (although Karen is the one needing the caretaking, not Jerry - he just has a lot of thoughts about things), and is able to be patient with both of them. As noted, they are watching News most of the day and at this point in their life, they are not looking to change their political views. The ability to politely disengage if inappropriate conversations regarding politics, or defer to other topics, would be important in working with Karen. She does not need any specialized nursing care at this time. She is mobile, although should be walking with someone if outside and should not be left alone. You can be in another room if she is sleeping, though. Karen does not have any specific hobbies although she does like to socialize. We would like her to be outside more for walks as able or open to other ideas to keep her more entertained. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, and companionship.
