About the job

About who needs care: My father is 72 years-old and sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) with brain bleed in December 2024. Due to cancer treatment for multiple myeloma 15 years ago he developed severe neuropathy and numbness in his extremities, most notably in his legs and feet causing instability of gait which thus caused him to fall head first down the stairs sustaining this life-altering injury. He and my mother (age 71) live together and she is my father's primary caregiver. He requires full/total assist and care with ADLs and mobility, including turning and repositioning every 2 hours. He uses a wheelchair and requires transfer via hoyer lift. Post injury he is aphasic and can occasionally communicate with one or two words here and there and an occasional sentence. He remembers all family members and friends and appears to have his intelligence and memory intact (he's always been very intelligent and witty/great sense of humor--I know he's still got it in there we just need to work with speech therapy to help him remember how to get the right words out). He receives PT/OT/SLP and was just discharged home from a rehab facility within the past two weeks. Both my parents adore their four grandchildren, nature, and spending time socializing with family and friends. My mother is a retired nurse and my father is a retired accountant. My father has worked very hard his entire life and has always been devoted to and taken very good care of his family. He is the sweetest, most kind human I know and a man of integrity. He truly deserves the best care and my mother is so burnt out from caring for him and dealing with this traumatic change in their lives she is having a hard time accepting their new reality, she never gets sleep anymore, and she is completely overwhelmed emotionally and physically. I have been the secondary caregiver and as I have two young children (ages 1 and 6) it is impossible for me to be there all the time to help. My mother will need assistance twice daily (either 2-4 hours in the morning and then 2-4 hours in the late afternoon/early evening) to get my father out of bed to wheelchair using the hoyer lift, help change/clean/bathe him, turn and reposition, etc. After being up in the wheelchair for breatkfast and/or lunch and to maybe go outside for a little bit if the weather is nice, he will need to be transferred back to bed via hoyer lift if he is tired. Then out of bed to wheelchair for afternoon and dinner and return to bed in evening. I would need a caregiver/CNA/GNA who can take initiative and help my parents and also respect their privacy. Being skilled and experienced using a hoyer lift is absolutely non-negotiable. We need to work on increasing my father's caloric intake as he has lost 20 pounds. My father is 5 feet 10 inches and previous weight of 160 and he currently weighs approximately 140. We require someone who is strong and capable of lifting as my father's body can become rigid at times. About the care needs: We need someone kind and gentle, pleasant and social. Someone not intrusive or judgmental. Someone who takes initiative to help, but doesn't overstep or invade privacy. Specialized skills required: experience with hoyer lift and wheelchairs, ADLs, turning/repositioning. Medical training important. Must have own transportation. Services needed include: meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
