We adopted the cat, he's young and to my knowledge, has never been groomed. He's skittish and he makes no sounds so far, other than a really low purr when he's happy. As I try to brush him, he does purr, but his hair is full of litter, mostly in the old hair along his sides and belly, and tail! So, when it begins to pull, he's no longer purring, and he's had enough. I don't know whether it would be better to wash him first, to get all the litter out, then comb or whatever. Oh, and he is what I would call a long hair.
