Duties and Responsibilities: Respect children as individuals, be sensitive and respond to their individual needs and have age-appropriate expectations. To be sensitive to children's daily and changing needs, as well as being able to remain calm and relaxed in a stressful situation. To work with children in the classroom, on a daily basis (to be counted in the staff-to-child ratio at least 75% of the time), both individually and in groups, using developmentally appropriate practices, programs, and curricula. Develop/and or adapt overall curriculum, incorporating the centers educational philosophy and developmentally appropriate practices with the understanding that "play" is a major component in how young children learn. Develop lesson plans/newsletters monthly to organize daily program plans, curriculum and materials. Plan daily classroom schedule and maintain child and classroom record-keeping to meet individual and group needs of children within the classroom. Conduct a room orientation with new staff members that introduces them to the classroom schedule, safety procedures, handling of accident/illness reports, individual children and their needs and other systems utilized within the classroom. Clearly define your expectations. Direct and supervise assistant teachers during day-to-day operations. Delegate duties, to Assistant Teacher, to ensure the smooth operation of the classroom. Take care of responsibilities such as napping, feeding, diapering, toileting, as needed. Deal with children with warmth and affection. Be aware of the health of children and report any abnormalities. Acquire a thorough knowledge of what to do in an emergency situation. Give full attention to all children and activities within the classroom. To create a classroom environment which enables staff, children, seniors and volunteers to work within the developmentally appropriate curriculum. To model developmentally appropriate practices for other staff members. Inform director of staff issues and needs, if unable to resolve within the classroom. To communicate, orally and in writing, to all involved, the needs of children, their families and the relationship between these needs and the services the Center provides. Day-to-day communication with parents, including interpretation, and follow through of Center philosophy and policies. Conduct a conference with family members at least once a year and at other times, as needed, to discuss children's progress, accomplishments, and difficulties at home and at the program. Communicate Center philosophy and program services to others as needed. Complete all forms, logs and reports as required. Attend and participate in all scheduled staff meetings. To work with Center Director to ensure appropriate and smooth scheduling procedures as they pertain to the unique needs of the age group. Participate, as needed, on Center committees and task groups. Represent St. Ann Center by involvement with community committees, agencies, and professional conferences. Maintain involvement in national, state and local early childhood professional organizations (i.e. The Registry). Assist the Center Director in supervising support staff in their classrooms and trains, directs and recommends evaluation of their daily performance. To work with seniors and volunteers in the classroom and demonstrate activities planned with the children so that their contribution is maximized. To perform any duty as deemed necessary by the Center Director.
