Our rules are simple: if the child can do something on their own, they should; and don't let them do things that make you dislike them. We also believe in giving them commands instead of "asking" them to clean up their room, for example. Misbehavior garners a timeout. All the kids enjoy their independence, especially the older kids who require less attention and more direction. They are homeschooled and have regular tutors, so there will be times when just the 4- and 2-year-olds need to be babysat. The youngest still takes daily naps also.
