Like most tax-related forms, the W-4 can be confusing if you’re not familiar with tax terminology. Many caregivers need help filling out their W-4 before they begin working, and it’s important that this is done correctly so the correct amount of federal income taxes can be withheld each pay period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To assist with any help you may need, let’s walk through the Employee\u2019s Withholding Certificate since that will most likely be what’s required in your situation. Keep in mind that allowances no longer exist so there may be a little more work required on your part to complete your W-4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you don’t have a 2024\u00a0Federal W-4, visit our Forms page<\/a> or download a copy<\/a> and follow along with these instructions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is one of two required sections of the W-4. You simply fill out your personal information and indicate whether you\u2019re:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Single or married, but filing a separate income tax return than your spouse.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n Married filing jointly (both you and your spouse are included on the same tax return).<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n Head of household (you\u2019re unmarried and pay more than half the costs of upkeeping your home for yourself and at least one other person, such as a child)<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n You only need to complete this section if you have more than one job at a time, such as working in a nanny share<\/a>, or if you checked the box in Step 1 indicating that you\u2019re married filing jointly and your spouse also works.
