About

This course explores designing and activating clay instruments, while considering the medium’s unique relationship with sound. We will review the four main types of ceramics instruments; aerophones (ex. whistles), chordophones (ex. harp), idiophones (ex. shakers), and membranophones (ex. drums) and explore building strategies for peak resonance. Hand-building and wheel throwing techniques will be demonstrated and students are free to explore these possibilities in service of designing their instruments.

Instruction will follow the text Barry Hall’s “From Mud to Music”.

-This class includes 25lbs of clay and studio access.

- This class is non-refundable if cancelation is less then 48 hours before.

- Make up classes are negotiable.

- Students are responsible to buy their own set of tools for the class.
