I have had two pet Labrador retrievers over a period of 20 years,Sam was black and Charlie was chocolate.Both dogs were very affectionate and clingy,wherever I went they wanted to go and they made me feel guilty if I left them at home,even when I was going to work. Fortunately as I was a pub /restaurant manager I could arrange it that I always had time slots where I could take them out at least 4 times a day,morning,lunch time,teatime and last thing at night when I finished work.Both dogs could be sleeping but would wake the second I moved,they would Yelp and dance the moment I would move anywhere near the cupboard where their leads were kept. Both dogs lived to 14 years of age and the reason I did not get another dog is that I found it too upsetting when they both had to be put to sleep.I’m sure they knew what was happening but it would have been cruel to try and prolong their lives.
