My name is Kate Martens and I am a fourth-year undergraduate student at the University of Toronto. I I grew up in downtown Ottawa, enrolled in French Immersion from JK all the way through to grade 12, graduating with a French immersion bilingual certificate. I worked for the Parliament of Canada as a tour guide in Summer 2022, and since on a casual basis over the holidays, where I would have to provide interpretive tours to the public of the House of Commons and Senate in both official languages. I received a level fop C1(Advanced) in Oral proficiency, despite only a level of B2 Upper Intermediate) being required for the position. Additionally, I worked with Parks Canada in summer of 2023, at a national historic site where I also provided tours in French, and would deliver programing to children of all ages in both languages, explaining complex subjects such as ecological systems and indigenous history.
