Teaching is not a skill to be learned or a craft to be mastered: it is a discipline to which one must submit and, through submission, acquire wisdom.
For this reason I see no essential difference between teaching children at kindergarten and teaching professional Masters students at university. In both cases the objective is to create in the students’ minds a sense of what it is to know. I assume that relationship is central to teaching, which I see as constantly revealing the qualities of relationship that are conducive to education and those which are not. The Socratic model is one style of educational relationship, though I incline personally to the ideas
of the Italian educationalist, Loris M(1920-1994), who said:
"Learning and teaching should not stand on opposite banks and just watch the river flow by; instead, they should embark together on a journey down the
water. Through an active, reciprocal exchange, teaching can strengthen how
to learn."
