For the past three years I have been employed as a Teacher Assistant at the Northern Support School in Launceston. I have worked with a range of students all of whom live with disabilities. My role has been to assist with their learning needs. In addition to this I have been required to assist with things such as; toileting, the use of de-escalating techniques as a response to aggressive behaviour, accompanying students less able on outings and the use of basic sign language. I was also required to complete documentation on the student’s behaviours in terms of eating patterns, social interactions and engagement in activities. Ever since I was a child I have been a part of providing support for my two disabled brothers. My role in their care has involved feeding, toileting, showering, physiotherapy, hoist transportation and administering medications. It has shaped me to be an extremely empathetic person and taught me that although important, caring for people is about a lot more than the day to day essentials. The ability to empower an individual’s choice and bring a positive influence to their health and well-being in a safe manner is essential.
