I have been in the healthcare industry as a disability support worker for around 8 years, in those years I have gained an extreme amount of knowledge and skills by working one on one with a client who had an acquired brain injury and some challenging behaviours, I enjoyed knowing I was making a real difference to her life and it was a joy to see her big smile every morning when I arrived. I then went on to work in a group home with 4 ladies aged from 28-70 all with different diagnosed disabilities, mainly Down syndrome and autism. Some duties performed in these roles were: meal preparation, household duties,dispersing medication,dealing with challenging behaviours,report writing,using a hoist, assisting with personal care (showering/toileting) and transporting to personal/medical appointments. I’m also aware that the clients needs always come first and Im their friend aswell as their carer.
