My personal experience with aged care comes from looking after my nanna and popa. My nan was quite elderly and ill when I was around 10. I would get mum to take me shopping every weekend for some ingredients to a new dish me and nan would have spoken about through the week. Probably after seeing it in a magazine together. I would spend all Friday after school making these assuming dishes to take over to my nannas house the next day. The look on her face is something I will never forget. As I was a little older, around 17 my poppa was diagnosed with dementia. This was hard for the family as he was very much a strong, independent man who was very strong minded. This made it a bit hard having carers for him as he gave everyone a bit of a hard time. As I was already going to see poppa everday it made sense for me to become his carer. Up until a few weeks before my poppa away I would cook, clean, provide basic personal care, organise the house and run errands for my poppa.
