About who needs care: My mom has vascular dementia. She does poorly when not eating and drinking (dehydration especially affects hercognitive functioning) My 86-year-old dad has been primary caregiver, but does not have the patience to get her to eat and drink. She is weak and has been unable to walk for the past few weeks greatly due to poor nutrition and dehydration. My Dad can not move her so she is currently in a rehab facility. The people there are wonderful, but do not have the time to sit with her to monitor her fluid intake and make sure she stays hydrated. This is especially important since she has chronic kidney disease and we are trying to avoid a need for dialysis. My mom can be very confused and disoriented when dehydrated but is like a different person when she is well hydrated. This is evident from the few times I have had to take her to ER for IV hydration. She is currently non-ambulatory, but I hope this can be reversed with good nutrition and hydration.
About the care needs: I am looking for someone who is kind, sweet and extremely patient, and who is willing to engage my Mom by reading to her or playing simple games. My moms ability to hold a conversation has been limited lately, but I am hopeful that this will improve with better care. My mom is a people pleaser and feels very upset if she feels she is inconveniencing someone or senses a person is upset or angry at her. That is why a sweet disposition and an abundance of patience is a must; someone who is a talker and is willing to engage my mom kindly even if her ability to respond is limited.
