Nannies often spend 8+ hours a day with a family’s children and become an integral part of their lives. Yet how much do parents really understand about what it’s like to be their family’s nanny?
We recently asked on Facebook and on our community site: ”What do you wish parents knew about your job?”

- “That we aren’t just a ‘babysitter’ and how hard/much we do love your kids as they’re our own!!! It’s hard work.” ~Kim
- “Know the difference between a nanny and a housekeeper. I’m a nanny I watch and tend to your children, keep them safe and love them. I tidy up after them, but I will not be cleaning your toilets and mopping your floors…. I get no break or lunch. I don’t get a moment to chat with a coworker. I wish there was a class for parents to be nannies for one day just to see how unappreciated they feel.” ~Giovanna
- “That when you are home your kids are 10x worse than when we’re alone lol” ~Samantha
- “How many duties and responsibilities I have. Caring for someone who cannot take care of themselves for whatever reason is a big responsibility that shouldn’t be taken lightly….it is my calling I wouldn’t do anything else, but it surely doesn’t pay well. We are severely underpaid…I wish they would at least pay a livable wage.” ~Yvonne
- “That my first priority is your children. So, if I see something harmful or stressful to them, I’m going to bring it up to you, even if you ‘don’t think it’s any of my business’. Their mental and emotions well-being is JUST as important as their physical.” ~Maggie
- “I would like my parents to know This is my career. Not just a job. I’ve been a nanny (not a babysitter) for over 20 years. Still keep in contact with most of these families. I genuinely love their children…. Communication is a must. I should feel comfortable coming to you about anything.” ~Pam
- “When we have your kids we love them like you.” ~Joanna
