Babies born prematurely face various issues other newborns don’t – like infections and feeding problems. But they also have to deal with diapers designed for full-term infants, that are too big and hurt their fragile skin. Now, Huggies has created a special diaper just for preemies. The Huggies Little Snugglers Nano Preemie Diapers were crafted specifically for babies who weigh less than two pounds. They also have a special design for sensitive skin.
“We’re passionate about helping all babies thrive, especially the smallest and most fragile,” said Eleonora Daireaux, Vice President, Huggies North America, according to a statement from the company. “After hearing of the need for a diaper that meets the special requirements of these babies, our expert teams in skin science, research, product safety and manufacturing were inspired.” The diaper giant partnered with neonatal intensive care unit nurses and therapists to learn exactly what premature infants needed.
Each diaper goes through a 40-point individual inspection. “Good-fitting diapers are important to the healthy growth and development of our smallest patients,” said Anjanette Lee, MS, CCC/SLP, NTMTC, an infant development specialist at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital in Houston, Texas, one of nine Level III and Level IV NICUs that tested the diapers.
The new diapers have gentle, specially-sized fasteners and a narrow, absorbent pad for a flexible fit, so nurses and therapists can comfortably position babies in fetal tucks, with arms and legs close to their bodies. “In our experience, we found Huggies Little Snugglers Nano Preemie Diapers conformed to the baby’s bottom without gapping or limiting leg movement,” Lee said. Since preemies have underdeveloped skin, Huggies made sure the smooth liner and gentle leg gathers were soft enough to avoid irritating the baby’s skin.
They’re the cutest diapers we’ve ever seen, and they’ll let our most delicate newborns grow and develop without added injury.
