Getting ready to pick out names for your new baby? Or just plain curious to see what our fellow humans are choosing to name their kids this year? Then you’re in luck! Nameberry, an expert baby names resource, just came out with its list of the 100 most popular baby names for boys and girls in the first half of 2016.
I’ll give you a sneak peek: Olivia tops the charts for girls; Ezra for boys.
But while it seems as though we may (finally) be seeing the petering out of the era of “wildly ecclectic baby names” — which gave us names like Apple, Bobo, and Psalm — it doesn’t look like it’ll be done anytime soon. In fact, after having peeped at this year’s list, it looks as though we may be shifting back into another common baby-naming trend: picking names straight out of pop culture.
What makes me say that? Well, for starters, “Khaleesi” came in at #48 for girls’ names (remember, this list is out of 100 names for girls ALONE)…as in Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons. You know, from Game of Thrones!
For boys, the theme seems to be “Oldies but Goodies,” with chart-toppers including a lot of names that are either Biblical in nature, or names that your great-great-great-grandfathers sported back in the day. Among the top 30 boys’ names are Ezra, Asher, Atticus, Declan, Oliver, Levi, Wyatt, Jasper, Elijah, Caleb, Theodore, Sebastian, Liam, Oscar, and Eli…all within the top 25 names for boys.
