Getting lost is so much fun!
Corn mazes have been around for a while, entertaining some and scaring a bunch of others! The twisty, winding trails don’t just pop up in late summer. The maze layout is created months ahead of time, most often these days by computer. It usually reflects a theme, whether it’s a favorite sports team, movie heroes, or scenic wonders. Planted at two or three times the density of regular corn, the seeds are sewn three or more weeks later than a regular crop to make sure the stalks are still standing through late October or early November.
Some mazes on our list are kid-friendly, but others are much scarier! Guides are typically placed at regular intervals or will be walking the maze to make sure you aren’t lost there forever. And you’ll almost always find other things to do, including hayrides, pumpkin patches, and games. Please note that most mazes do not allow pets. Also, in case of inclement weather, check before you visit to make sure the maze is open.
Whether you’re a parent, babysitter, or nanny looking for a fun fall outing with the kids, here’s a sampling of the mazes you’ll find within an hour or so of Baltimore.

Education goes with the entertainment at Sharp’s at Waterford Farm, where the corn maze takes up 6 acres. This year’s theme is farm dogs! Signs throughout the maze describe how dogs help on a farm, like guarding a flock and protecting a pumpkin patch from hungry, nibbling deer. The maze isn’t scary, and guests should be able to complete it in 30-45 minutes. The end-of-the-season weekends are designated as dog days, which means you may bring your own dog (on a leash and clean up after any little deposits).
