Check your refrigerators! Sargento is one of the latest companies affected in a national cheese recall prompted by a possible listeria contamination at a manufacturing plant.
The cheese recall was prompted after Sargento learned of the possible contamination by manufacturer Deutsch Kase Haus, LLC, based in Middlebury, Indiana.
Certain packages of Sargento’s specialty Longhorn Colby cheese that were packaged at the Plymouth, Wisconsin, facility were affected in the recall, according to a post on Sargento’s website.
- Sargento Ultra Thin Sliced Longhorn Colby, 6.84 oz., UPC 4610000228, with sell by dates of “12APR17B” and “10MAY17B”
- Sargento Chef Blends Shredded Nacho & Taco Cheese, 8 oz., UPC 4610040041, with sell by dates “H14JUN17” and “H12JUL17”
In addition, Sargento said it is recalling other cheeses packaged on the same line as the affected cheese “out of an abundance of caution.” The following cheeses have also been recalled:
- Sargento Sliced Colby-Jack Cheese, 12 oz., UPC: “4610000109” with sell by date “11JUN17B”
- Sargento Sliced Pepper Jack Cheese, 12 oz., UPC: “4610000108” with sell by dates “12JUN17B,” “09JUL17B” and “10JUL17B”
- Sargento Chef Blends Shredded Taco Cheese, 8 oz., UPC: “4610040002” with sell by dates “H14JUN17” and “F28JUN17”
- Sargento Off The Block Shredded Fine Cut Colby-Jack Cheese, 8 oz., UPC: “4610040014” with sell by date “F05JUL17”
- Sargento Off The Block Shredded Fine Cut Cheddar Jack Cheese, 8 oz., UPC: “4610040076” with sell by date “F05JUL17”
No illnesses have been reported and no other Sargento products have been recalled as of Monday. Listeria can cause serious infections typically affecting older adults, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women and their newborns.

Sargento’s recall prompted Taylor Farms to recall 6,630 pounds of chicken and pork salads that were shipped to distribution centers in California, Oregon and Texas, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
The USDA said that the affected Taylor Farms products were:
- 10.5 oz. plastic trays of “Signature Cafe Southwest Chicken Premade Salad” with use-by dates of “2/13/17, 2/14/17 or 2/15/17.”
- 10.5 oz. plastic trays of “Signature Café Southwest Style Salad with Chicken” with use-by dates “2/14/17, 2/15/17 or 2/16/17.”
- 10.5 oz. plastic trays of “H-E-B Shake Rattle & Bowl Rowdy Ranch Hand (contains pork)” with use-by dates “2/17/17, 2/18/17 or 2/19/17.”
Meijer grocery store chain also announced on Friday that it was voluntarily recalling Meijer Colby and Colby Jack bulk cheeses due to the contamination at the same manufacturer. The Meijer cheeses affected in the recall are Meijer Mini Horn Colby Jack, UPC number 2-15927-00000-6 and Meijer Colby Mini Horn, UPC number 2-15938-00000-2, according to Meijer’s website.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, Sara Lee announced it was voluntarily recalling more than 700 cases of Sara Lee Sliced Monterey Jack Cheese with Jalapeno Peppers, labeled Item No. “40205,” Product Lot “#A319349610,” and with a use-by date of “JUN-12-17” and Sara Lee Sliced Colby Jack Cheese, labeled Item No. “40208,” Product Lot “#A319348610,” and with a use-by date of “JUN-11-17.”
The affected cheeses were distributed to retailers in Alabama, California, Louisiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Texas, according to a post on Sara Lee’s website.
