RECALL ALERT: Frito-Lay Jalapeño Chips May Contain Salmonella

Heads up, parents: If you’ve stocked the pantry with Frito-Lay’s potato chips recently, you may want to take a second look.

The snack manufacturer announced a recall for two of its jalapeño-flavored chips due to possible salmonella contamination in the seasoning. The voluntarily recall includes the following varieties: Jalapeño Flavored Lay’s Kettle Cooked potato chips and Jalapeño Flavored Miss Vickie’s Kettle Cooked.

“This action is the direct result of a supplier’s recent recall of a seasoning blend which includes jalapeño powder that could contain Salmonella,” according to the Food & Drug Administration. “Although no Salmonella was found in the seasoning supplied to Frito-Lay, the company has decided to recall these products out of an abundance of caution.”

The spicy chips, which come in full-size bag and in multipacks, were sold in stores and online from major grocers and food retailers nationwide. While no injuries were reported at the time the recall was issued, salmonella, a perpetuator of 1 million foodborne illnesses a year, can cause “diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection,” according to the Centers for Disease Prevention.

The recall includes all sizes of the Jalapeño Flavored Lay’s Kettle Cooked potato chips and Jalapeño Flavored Miss Vickie’s Kettle Cooked potato chips that feature a “guaranteed fresh” date of July 4 or before on the front upper panel of the bag.

The pepper-flavored chip was also placed inside of the following multipacks with a consumption date of June 20 or prior.

  • 12 count Lay’s Kettle Cooked Multipack Sack
  • 20 count Frito-Lay Bold Mix Sack
  • 30 count Miss Vickie’s Multipack Tray
  • 30 count Lay’s Kettle Cooked Multipack Tray
  • 32 count Miss Vickie’s Multipack Box

It should be noted that no additional flavors of Lay’s Kettle Cooked potato chips or Miss Vickie’s potato chips are affected by this recall.
