Vicky G., a senior care provider in Mechanicsburg, PA,chats about finding a her second career in senior care.
Mechanicsburg, PA – A well-liked member of the Bridge’s staff, 54-year-old Vicki Gruber has made caring for those with the advanced stages of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease her passion. A retiree from the state government, Gruber wanted a job that would be fun and distract her from her empty nest at home. Those two requirements led Gruber to The Bridges at Bent Creek, an assisted living home in Mechanicsburg that offers dementia care for its residents. Gruber quickly became zealous about caring for those in need. “I’m at the age where I’m comfortable in my life and can give all my attention to those I take care of,” said Gruber.
At one point, Gruber found herself in need of the same care she gives. After being diagnosed with cancer, Gruber endured chemotherapy. Gruber said she was able to get through with prayer and by pushing herself to keep going.
During chemotherapy, Gruber continued to work as a caregiver, finding comfort in her favorite part of the job. “My favorite is when the residents give you a kiss on the cheek and tell you that they love you,” said Gruber, “because you know they mean it.”
