Kelly Clarkson recently shared an adorable video of her daughter, River Rose, snacking on Nutella toast for the first time.
“River’s first Nutella experience. It should have been via crepe but toast was easier ? #nutellagoodness #australiagoodness,” the Grammy-winning mom wrote on Instagram.
“River, do you like Nutella?” Clarkson asked the chocolate-faced toddler in the video, which has been viewed more than 3.6 million times.
“Yeah!,” River said, as she broke out into a happy dance.
But the Internet wasn’t having it. Social media users took to the comments section to slam Clarkson for feeding her soon-to-be 3-year-old the chocolate hazelnut goodness.
“There’s a lot of sugar in that,” wrote leo._.gemini.
Another user, smilja63, wrote, “Check the ingredients! You may rethink it in future.”
“Nutella is cancerous u know,” wrote heyyy_its_juliana.
They commenters are referring to a study published earlier this year that found a possible link between palm oil — a main ingredient of Nutella — and cancer. The European Food Safety Authority said that when palm oil can be a potential carcinogen once it reaches a certain temperature.
Nutella fought back against the study, deeming its product safe for consumption.
And while it’s not up to us to judge, many Instagrammers came to Clarkson’s defense over the sweet treat.
“Why do people think they can tell a total stranger what they should or should not feed their children? Just because someone is in the public eye does not give anyone permission to armchair quarterback their lives. Cute video, adorable child,” wrote sheila.jacob.1.
Another user, justtakeadeepbreath, wrote, “My son goes just nuts whenever I break out the Nutella! Shoot, I go a little nuts myself too, love the stuff. Lol.”
When it comes to parenting, it’s safe to apply the old adage, “Mother knows best.” I know I’m guilty of enjoying a spoonful (or two, or three) of the chocolate hazelnut spread.
