Do your kids love finger paints as much as mine do? It’s a fun, easy activity we all enjoy on rainy and sunny days, so I was super excited to find a few homemade recipes. They’re easy to make together and fun to play with!
1. Add 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1/3 cup of flour to a saucepan. Mix in 2 cups of water and whisk until it’s smooth. Turn on the heat to low and keep stirring until the mixture thickens – about 10 to 15 minutes. Pour an equal amount of mixture into plastic cups – one for each color you wish to make. Stir in food coloring and let cool.
2. Mix 2 cups of flour, 2 packs of unsweetened Kool Aid and 1/2 cup of salt with 3 cups of boiling water and 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil. This paint will be grainy, but it smells good and dries nicely.
3. Squirt corn syrup into a bowl. Stir in a few drops of food coloring, and you’re done. This sticky mixture offers great coverage.
4. Mix 1/2 cup of cornstarch and 2 cups of water in a saucepan. If you want the paint to have a shiny look, add 1 tablespoon of glycerin. Boil and stir constantly until the mixture is thick. Allow it to cool, add food coloring and paint. This recipe makes slightly gloppy paint with vibrant colors.
5. Pour 2 cups of cold water into a large bowl. Slowly mix in 2 cups of white flour. Divide into several bowls and add food coloring.
These recipes are fun to make with your kids, and then you can play together! I do recommend storing the homemade finger paints in sealed jars so they don’t dry out or spill.
