According to psychologist Herbert Nieburg, author of Pet Loss: A Thoughtful Guide for Adults and Children, “pet ownership is good for your health both physically and psychologically.”
However, many people shy away from having pets because of the mess that come along with them. Muddy paws and shedding fur could potentially ruin your clean house. So we decided to look at a range of different pets and rate them on their cleanliness.

1. Budgies
Budgies are a great pet option as they are very easy to look after. They can be kept in a cage and let out within the house for daily exercise. Whilst they are known to be a prodigious pooper their waste tends to dry pretty quickly and does not smell much. You can easily get away with cleaning the cage weekly and still maintain a fresh smelling and clean house! We rate budgies a 9/10 for cleanliness.
2. Hamsters
The benefit of having a hamster is that they are incredibly easy to look after. They are also relatively clean animals. They typically only use one specific corner of their cage as a latrine and the rest of the cage is left spotless so you only need to spot clean a small area. A deep clean is needed less often, making it very easy to maintain. Hamsters are ideal for those who are sensitive to smell. If a hamster is properly cared for it rarely produces unpleasant smells, making them ideal pets if you want to maintain a clean house. We rate hamsters an 8/10 for cleanliness.
3. Guinea pigs
They are a great pet for the kids to cuddle, and provide fun entertainment as they kick their feet together and run around (this is called popcorning). When it comes to the cleanliness, they are kept in a cage which means they won’t ruin your flooring or carpets. The cage will need to be spot-cleaned on a daily basis and thoroughly cleaned on a weekly basis. As long as you are cleaning your cage on a daily basis, there should be no smell at all. We give guinea pigs a rating of 7/10 for cleanliness!
4. Cats
We’ve all heard cats are better pets than dogs as they don’t require as much effort from the owner and they self-clean. Whether your cat stays indoors all day or is outdoors a lot, they all care about their hygiene. Also, they tend to scratch off their own claws to prevent them from growing out, so unless your cat is feisty you don’t have to worry about that either. Sorry dog owners, seems like cats win! The only con about cats is shedding, which can get all over the furniture and even your clothes. This can be a pain to constantly vacuum or lint roll, so for this reason we are rating cats a 6/10 for cleanliness!
5. Dogs
One of the main problems with dogs that many owners deal with is hair. Unfortunately, there are no breeds that do not shed at all, but there are some that shed less often such as Labradoodles, Bichon Frises and Schnauzers. In order to clean up the hair, you can use many different methods depending on your preference including hand-held hoovers, dustpans or swiffers. However, the best method to ensure that hair shedding is minimised is by properly grooming your dog. Ideally, you should brush your dog a few times a week. A good tip is doing this outside if you can, to ensure you are not creating more mess inside the house. We rate dogs a 5/10 for cleanliness.
All pets require some maintenance in order to ensure your house is clean, however some are easier than others. You could always just find a cleaner to help you maintain a clean house whilst having your lovely pets running around!
