Today when we think of family no single image comes to mind. The concept of family has evolved so rapidly over the last few decades that what was considered the traditional family structure – a married man and woman and their children – has become more of a rarity. Nowadays, the typical family structure includes blended families, single parent families, same-sex parent families and many more.
Modern families
There are many reasons why the family landscape has changed so much in recent years: the legalisation of same-sex adoption in 2002 and same-sex marriage in 2013, a more progressive and accepting society, and the battle for equality are just a few.
As the family dynamic becomes more progressive, we see society become more accepting of various family structures. *A recent survey by Care.com highlighted just how accepting families in the UK have become:
When asked if they want their children to be happy in their relationship regardless of their sexual orientation:
- 70% of parents from single parent families agreed
- 75% of parents from traditional families agreed
- 73% of parents from blended families agreed
When asked if parents want their children to make friends without any distinction on colour, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, nor disabilities:
- 73% of parents from single parent families agreed
- 78% of parents from traditional families agreed
- 76% of parents from blended families agreed
To gain a better insight into familial units today, we have asked parent bloggers with modern families about their experiences raising children. While the road to being a family is different for each, they all have one goal in common – to raise happy, healthy children in loving families.
In our interviews these modern families share their experiences and discuss their feelings about being accepted into society today.
