These days, winter can change from unseasonably mild to bitterly cold in the blink of an eye. The last thing you need is to be caught off guard and end up with your home damaged by the cold. Follow these 7 tips to prepare your home for a cold snap.
1. Check the central heating
It is important to have your central heating and boiler regularly serviced to make sure it is operating correctly and safely. While you may not want to splash out at the time, it will cost you far more if your central heating system breaks down – not to mention having to bear cold showers in the depths of winter!
2. Inspect the fireplace & chimney
Clean out any soot and debris before lighting a fire as you don’t want these obstructions to catch flames. Close the flue to stop warm air escaping when the fire is not in use. You should not be able to feel cold air coming down the chimney.
3. Protect your pipes
Water freezing inside your pipes can cause them to crack and burst. Use insulation to protect any water pipes that run through unheated areas of your home. It is recommended that you leave your heating on at least 14 degrees Celsius during the winter to prevent freezing in the pipes. Cover outdoor faucets with insulators. Remove any outdoor hoses from the faucets and store them during the cold snap.
4. Clear the gutters
Keep the gutters clear of leaves and debris as they can trap rainwater and moisture which can freeze and then leak through your roof when it melts.
5. Secure roof tiles
Strong winds and snow can wreak havoc on your home exterior so be sure to replace any damaged, missing or loose roof tiles.
6. Insulate your windows & doors
Locate any drafts coming in through your windows and doors. Seal the frame with a suitable sealing material such as rubber seals or self-adhesives like sealing foam or an acrylic compound.
7. Check your fuse box & electrics
Hire a registered electrician to check your fuse box and wirings to ensure that everything is working safely. As we never know when the next cold snap might hit, it is best to keep your home serviced and prepared at all times to avoid any wintery mishaps.
