DIY Craft: How to Make a Barn

Here's how you can make a classic barn out of a Quaker® canister.

DIY Craft: How to Make a Barn

A sheep goes Baa. A cow goes Moo. A horse goes Neigh. Then, at the end of the day, they all go to sleep in their barn. Here’s a great way to make a barn from a few household items so that your little animal lover will have a place to call home for his or her farm friends. And it’s an easy craft you can make together!

Note: Parents should handle the hot glue and sharp objects!

Supplies

  • 1 empty Quaker® Oats canister
  • Construction paper (red, green, or other desired colors)
  • Pencil
  • Scissors or X-Acto knife (grown-ups only)
  • White and brown paint (or desired colors)
  • Glue
  • White paper (or large cone coffee filter)
  • Paint brush
  • Toy animals

Directions

1) Gather all of your supplies.

2) Take the green construction paper and measure 1.5-inch from a bottom edge. Cut from end-to-end in a jagged formation, creating a grass-like pattern.

3) Wrap and glue the empty canister in the red paper, adding the green construction paper at the bottom.

4) Draw a barn door (about 3-inch by 3-inch) and window (about a 2-inch wide pentagram) with a pencil. (Grown-ups) use X-Acto knife or scissors to cut along the lines to create a door and window.

5) Paint edging details, as desired.

6) Take the piece of white paper and cut out a large circle (about 8-inch in diameter). Then cut a slit to the center of the circle and pull the corner around to create a cone. (You can also use a cone coffee filter.)

7) Paint and glue the roof to the top of the canister.
