There’s nothing quite like this video of a father and son bonding for the first time with the help of a new pair of glasses.
U.S. Army Captain Brandon Caldwell left on a two-month deployment to Antarctica right before his son got his first pair of specs, according to People Magazine. While he was away, Caldwell worried his young child might forget about him, but that was anything but the case.
In the must-watch video, the excited duo can be seen smiling and singing the classic nursery rhyme “Pat-a-Cake.” The boy, named Reagan, is elated to see his dad clearly for the first time and snuggles up close to him.
“This was the hardest deployment yet by far and you can see how hard it was for Brandon to be away from Reagan by the emotion he showed when he finally had him in his arms again,” Amanda Caldwell told ABC7. “Reagan did not skip a beat and is loving having Daddy back home.”
It’s been a tough year for Reagan’s health, his mom told ABC7. Shortly after he was born, the boy began exhibiting symptoms associated with Group B Strep, a bacterial infection that’s passed from mother to baby during delivery. As a result, her son spent the beginning of his life in the intensive care unit, where he battled meningitis and sepsis and now needs glasses, according to ABC7.
“I was never told that this could make my baby sick,” Reagan’s mom said. “I was never told this could make my baby sick after leaving the hospital. I was not told anything about warning signs or symptoms of meningitis and sepsis.”
The stay-at-home mom created a Facebook page to chronicle Reagan’s health journey and spread awareness to other parents going through similar situations.
