A lot of parents have questions about baby acne, and they’re totally right to. It can be a strange experience to see your little one have acne if you didn’t know it was something possible. I have had experience with baby acne with three of my children and I thought I’d share a little bit about what I’ve learned with some other parents.
Baby acne is a relatively harmless condition that is seen on the chin, cheeks and forehead of newborns. Usually it appears within the first month of life for newborns and can be startling for parents because they wonder “Why does my baby have a rash on his or her face,” or “How come my baby has acne, what’s wrong?”
Why do baby’s get acne?
Babies get acne due to hormonal changes that are going on in the body. You have to imagine that coming into the world results in a lot of changes. You baby is developing and growing and with that comes a lot of internal and external changes. While you may see your baby doing a lot of different things, there’s a lot going on on the inside that you may not notice. When your baby experiences these hormonal changes it can result in your baby’s body having their oil glands stimulated, resulting in acne.
Acne can also be the result of formula, spit up, and environment.
How do you treat baby acne?
Often times acne will go away on it’s own, but there are a few things to remember. Don’t pop, pick or pinch your baby’s spots. You can wash your baby’s face with mild soap, but take care in not using topical treatments or acne medication.
Check the lotions that you’re using on your baby. These can be clogging their pores, so you may want to eliminate their use.
