Meal Time Without TV

Meal Time Without TV

I am a mother of a two-year-old boy. Things get a little crazy at our house sometimes and as an easy babysitter I will turn on the TV while I do a few chores. I noticed I started getting in the habit of having the TV on during mealtimes. This was a habit I wanted to break early as to have more focused one-on-one time with my child and create good eating habits.

The result was beautiful, at first, he wanted the TV on so I re-direct him by singing songs. We are church going folks so began singing a fun song called “Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam” he was so happy and began dancing to it. He even pointed to a calendar we had on our wall with a picture of Christ and recognized it as Jesus. It was such a special teaching moment for me that I wouldn’t have had if I kept the TV on as a distraction.

What opportunities can you find to teach your child something that is important to you, whether that be about religion or something else that is important to you? Mealtime is a special time regardless if you are a nanny, caregiver or parent. Create opportunities to teach and connect with those you love
