Foods not allowed in PKU Diet

For new parents or parents that have just received a PKU diagnosis, I wanted to provide you with a list of PKU foods that are not allowed and that your child should not have.

If your child has PKU, it means that phenylalanine to builds up in their body. The build up of PHE (Phenylalanine) results from a deficiency in the enzyme that breaks it down. Therefore, your child will need to stay away from foods high in PHE.

Here is a list of foods that aren’t allowed:

  • Meat – Chicken, Turkey, Beef, Lamb, Pork,
  • Fish – All Kinds including shellfish
  • Eggs
  • Cheese
  • Nuts & seeds – this includes peanut butter
  • Wheat products – ordinary bread, flour, cakes, biscuits, pasta.
  • Soya
  • Quorn
  • Aspartame – something you’ll often see in diet beverages.
  • Ice Cream
  • Yogurt
  • Beans
  • As you can probably tell from this list, high protein foods contain a lot of PHE, which means your child will need to find protein from other sources. These have to be replaced by a special protein mixture from which the phenylalanine has been removed.
