Dog owners, listen up! Blue Buffalo Company is voluntarily recalling a production lot of its wet food for adult dogs, as it may contain elevated levels of naturally occurring beef thyroid hormones.
According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, the company is recalling one production lot of Blue Wilderness Rocky Mountain Recipe Red Meat Dinner Wet Food for Adult Dogs with a UPC code of 840243101153 and a best buy date of June 7, 2019.
Dogs that ingest high levels of beef thyroid hormones can have symptoms of increased thirst and urination, weight loss, increased heart rate and restlessness. The symptoms may stop when the use of impacted food is stopped, officials said. With prolonged consumption, the symptoms may increase to vomiting, diarrhea and rapid or difficulty breathing.
“Although the Blue Buffalo Customer Care Resource Team has not received any reports of dogs exhibiting these symptoms from consuming this product, the FDA advised Blue Buffalo of a single consumer who reported symptoms in one dog, who has now fully recovered,” the company wrote on its website. “Blue Buffalo immediately began an investigation, however, and after working with the FDA, Blue Buffalo decided it would be prudent to recall the one production lot in question.”
Products from the affected lot were sold nationally by pet specialty retailers and online. No other Blue Buffalo products are affected in the recall.
Officials said if your dog has eaten the recalled food and had any of the symptoms, stop using the food and contact your vet. If you’ve purchased the recalled food, you can throw it away or return it to the place purchased for a full refund.
This marks the second recall from Blue Buffalo Company in the recent months. In February, the Blue Buffalo Homestyle Recipe Healthy Weight Chicken Dinner with Garden Vegetables was recalled over possible metal contamination.
